Forecasting Love and Weather – Kdrama Review

Hangul: 기상청 사람들: 사내연애 잔혹사 편 (Literally: Meteorological Agency People: In House Love Cruelty Side/Office Romance Cruelty) – Yeah seriously the English translation totally romanticized that title

Original Air Date: February – April 2022

Plot: An office rom-com set at the KMA Meteorological Agency.

My Review:

Netflix gave us three romcoms at the same time: Forecasting Love and Weather, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, and Business Proposal. Out of the three, I was most excited to watch Forecasting Love and Weather with Park Min Young and Song Kang. Sadly, this drama did not love up to the starring cast and instead turned into a gloomy overcast day with a chance of showers. (The weather analogies were plentiful in this drama, so I feel like the reviews must also overuse them.)

The drama began enjoyable like a sunny spring day. I always enjoyed how Korean dramas take us deep into the inner workings of organizations. This was no exception. Who knew that predicting the weather could be so high stakes and impact business and people in both positive and negative ways? Each episode had a different weather condition that mirrored what the cast was experiencing. By the end, I was a little over the weather puns, but I appreciate the depth to which the writers stuck with the weather theme!

We first meet Ha Kyung (played by Park Min Young) who is navigating working at the same place as her ex-fiance, Han Ki Joon (played by Yoon Park). Of course she is cautious when the new young Lee Shi Woo (Song Kang) starts to hit on her. So great, love this setup. But then the plot turns into a tornado when they introduce Chae Yoo Jin (played by Yura). Yoo Jin is not only Ki Joon’s new wife, but she is Shi Woo’s ex-girlfriend. Say what, so now we are in a love square? Okay, partner swap I can handle. But what I can not take for another 12 episodes is the highly toxic relationship everyone had with their ex’s. It was unbelievable and disturbing how often they went to their ex for relationship advice and emotional support. This went on the entire series. I did not want to root for any couple. It is hard to get into a rom com when you ship no one.

The toxic love square.

The supporting cast also can make or break a drama for me. In this case, there was hardly anyone I liked. Lee Shi Woo’s dad gets the worse parent of the lifetime award. It always irritates me when dramas give them a redemption arc and flip their personality 180 degrees just to have a happy ending. Then there are other supporting cast members including a deadbeat dad, meddling mom, and sexist angry coworker. There was only one couple, who the internet named the Penguin Couple, who I enjoyed in all their awkward cuteness.

With a shoddy plot, unlikeable characters, and lack of on-screen chemistry, Forecasting Love and Weather, was a messy storm that is best to sail around (ok, really promise the last one!). I made it through to the end out of curiosity about how it would end and out of loyalty to Park Min Young and Song Kang. But I would put this low on the recommend list. There already have been three other rom coms out this year that is much better than this one (Business Proposal, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, and Our Beloved Summer). Do yourself a favor and watch one of those instead.

Final Opinion: If You Got Nothing Better to Watch
